Intro

Micol Hebron is a video and performance artist that has been out of LA for 15 years. She has studied in different universities which are; UCSD, the Accademia Di Belle Arti in Venice, Italy, and UCLA. She spends majority of her work in LA as she’s been in collaborative projects since 1992. She has had strategies in her work of consciousness-raising, collaboration, generosity, play, and participation to support and further feminist dialogues in art and life. On the other land we have Joseph DeLappe who is a Professor of Games and Tactical Media at Abretay University in Dundee, Scotland. Before he was a Professor at Abretay University, he was directing the Digital Media program at University of Nevada for 23 years. His work has been worldwide as they spread across different countries throughout the world. He’s very popular in his work as he has lectures throughout the world, one including the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. Not only that but he has been interviewed on CNN, NPR, CBC, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and on The Rachel Maddow Show on Air America Radio.

Formal Analysis

In Joseph DeLappe work’s in some of his work you see people using the oculus device as they play games which make it seem like a virtual reality. He adds details to his work. It’s like what’s happening right now as they would use it as have someone as a guide in one of his paintings “Virtual Paintings.2”. In his drawing and/or paintings, you can see that his work is I would describe it scribbly since it is scribbles with a background behind it. For example, “Doing My Taxes” is a long roll of sound-waves to me at least as it is a long process to complete it. His colors seem to the neutral colors like the rainbow but it’s not bright colors, it seems more dark as I can say. While in Micol Hebron art is very feminine, standing up what the media and the world have a problem with generally women. Her art is a story about the women’s nipple how we can’t display on the media because it’s wrong while men can. She’s usually use a female body to show case her work or a cartoon character to say what she has on her mind. She demonstrates how our bodies are normal and that we shouldn’t have to hide from it.

Content Analysis

In DeLappe work it gives you an idea on what happens in a video game and what happens in real life. If you look at his work, he show cases of children or what could be teenagers playing a game when actually someone can be experiencing that in that moment and time like his painting or drawing of the “America’s Army Drawings”. I believe on what’s on DeLappe minds is that we need to understand what’s happening in both worlds as what we let children/teenagers play while people are risking their lives and could or could not be doing the same thing but then again I don’t know as I don’t play video games. It gives a background and story to it but you need to connect the pieces to understand the story of it. On the other hand with Hebron’s work is showing the media the reality of what happens with women as they’re attacked and shamed for while men do exactly the same thing but instead of shame, they get praised. I believe she wants to show the normality and the problem in our world that we have on women’d body. The idea she trying to explore is spreading awareness in her work.

Synthesis/My Experience

As I was going through both of the artists work, I gained information in both work’s. Both of their works are entirely different but they show stories behind it. DeLappe focuses on what happens virtually vs what happens in reality. It shows what we’re facing as he gives details in his work. In Heron’s work, she shows the women’s body and there should be no shame in it which I love. I was more connected to Heron’s work as she shows the problem in what we have and there shouldn’t be a problem in the first place. She gives empowerment in her work as she focuses on bodies and giving confidence in that matter. She presented feminism and makes it into art.
